Did you know that Wales has more castles than any other country in Europe. With so many amazing medieval castles to choose from you may need help deciding which ones to visit.

Wales has about 400 castles, of which over 100 are still standing. They are beautifully preserved monuments in the kind of surroundings that make a visit an absolute necessity.

We have listed some of our favourite castles in Wales, and a link to self catering cottages we have in the area if you fancy a holiday close by.

Beaumaris Castle was built in 1295, and was the last and largest to be built by Kind Edward the I with 2,600 men engaged in the building work. The castle has a beautiful moat that you cross over to get into the castle as its first line of defence. It is very beautiful to visit today and in the warmer season often holds events for families.

Harlech Castle built in the late 13th century is in a spectacular position, and is a medieval fortification, constructed on top of a rock close to the Irish Sea, and with the backdrop of the Snowdonia National Park.

Caerphilly Castle is one of the great medieval castles of Europe, there are several factors for this including its size, making it the largest in Britain after Windsor, its use of water for defence and the fact that it is the first truly concentric castle in Britain. Of the time of its building in the late 13th century, it was a revolutionary masterpiece of military planning.

Caernarfon Castle is a world heritage site, mostly made of polygonal towers , with the Eagle Tower being the most impressive of these. The investiture of The Prince of Wales took place on 1st July 1969, at Caernarfon Castle in front of 4,000 guests inside the medieval walls.

Raglan Castle is a late medieval castle located just north of the village of Raglan in the county of Monmouthshire in south east Wales. The modern castle dates from between the 15th and early 17th-centuries.
